Today we take a close look at the preliminary remarks of St. Louis De Montfort on The True Devotion to Mary. On page 5 it is quoted:

St. Bonaventure tells us that all the angels in Heaven cry out incessantly to her: ‘Holy, holy, holy Mary, Mother of God and Virgin’ and that they offer to her, millions and millions of times a day, the Angelical Salutation, Ave Maria, prostrating themselves to honor her, and begging of her in her graciousness to honor them with some of her commands. Even St. Michael, as St. Augustine says, although the prince of the heavenly court is the most zealous in honoring her and causing her to be honored, and is always anxiously awaiting the honor of going at her bidding to render service to some of her servants.”

So, what is Mary’s relationship to God and to us on earth? It might well do us good to look first of all to the angels. Each angel is directly created by God as a non-corporeal pure spirit. There is neither maleness nor femaleness in them. Gender belongs to corporeal beings. Angels are by there very nature non-corporeal or spiritual beings. In this way they above all creatures (with the exception of Mary) are closest to God in every perfect way. They, above all creatures, (with the exception of Mary) reflect most perfectly the glory and splendor of God. There are many different species of Angels.

Each and every angel is a species unto itself. Whereas every human being belongs to the Human Species, each and every angel is an angelic species unto itself. Some of the angels known to us as revealed through Sacred Scripture and expounded on through Sacred Tradition and the Magisterial teaching authority of the Church are: Angels, Arch-Angels, Cherubim and Seraphim. The cherubim and seraphim are closest to God in every possible way except two: they are not eternal; they were directly created by God. Secondly, they are less than Mary!

Mary, assumed body and soul into Heaven, is the greatest creature in Heaven. She is the Mother of God. God sought her consent to become the Mother of God and Mary said yes! Through Mary, God chose to “partner” with humanity in the redemption of humanity. As Mary enjoyed the full benefit of the redemptive act of Christ on Calvary at the moment of her conception, so to she enjoys the full benefit of salvation in her eternal life with God in Heaven. In this instance, Mary can be said to be the fore-shadowing of what awaits us all in our pilgrim journey to Heaven. The Psalms say that we are gods. We will always remain as God’s creatures and His adopted children through Baptism. But as St. John says: “What we shall later be has not yet come to light; for we know that when it comes to light, we shall become like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

Mary points us to the way. If we model our whole lives on Mary, we shall certainly follow her to the destiny that God has planned for us from all eternity.
